The South Side Food Coop is an owner-operated, community-based grocery store project for the residents of the Southside Neighborhood of Syracuse, and is developed in conjunction with the Syracuse University’s South Side Initiative and the Southside Community Coalition. Slated for construction beginning in the summer of 2012, it will be the first new construction project in the neighborhood for over 30 years and will answer the needs of an area currently considered a “food desert.”
The main volume of the building is wrapped in a corrugated aluminum shell, folded asymmetrically to promote passive heat reduction and to maximize the roof area designated for photovoltaic panels. The roof is also designed to reclaim and recycle storm runoff. The two appurtenant volumes are clad in a fiber cement rain screen and house a three-stories of service program in the rear, and a third-party-operated cafe facing South Salina Street. The interior display walls, built-in seating and cash register storage units are part of a design/build package being delivered by sekou cooke STUDIO. The exterior site work will include porously paved parking spaces, an outdoor event space with fixed seating, bicycle parking and new street trees.
